چکیده

Predictions of the flow over a wall-mounted hump are obtained using solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES). The upstream solution is characterized by a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer with a thickness approximately half of the maximum hump thickness measured at a location about two chord lengths upstream of the leading edge. The Reynolds number based on the hump chord length is 9.75 × 10 5. A slot at approximately 65% chord (C) is used for flow control via a spatially uniform (with respect to the spanwise coordinate) steady suction, and with alternating suction/blowing. Solutions of the two-and three-dimensional RANS equations are obtained using the Spalart-Allmaras and SST turbulence models. DES is applied to a three-dimensional geometry corresponding to an extruded section of the hump. DES predictions of the baseline case exhibit a three-dimensional chaotic structure in the wake, with a mean reverse-flow region that is 20% shorter than predicted by the two-dimensional RANS computations. DES predictions of the pressure coefficient in the separated-flow region for the baseline case exhibit good agreement with measurements and are more accurate than either the S-A or SST RANS results. The simulations also show that blockage effects in the experiments used to assess the predictions are important – 3D RANS predictions more accurately predict the pressure distribution upstream and over the front portion of the hump. Predictions of the steady suction case show a reduction in the length of the reverse-flow region, though are less accurate compared to the baseline configuration. Unsteady 2D RANS predictions of the sinusoidal suction/blowing case are used to investigate impedance affects associated with increases in the driving velocity. The simulations show that a factor of four increase in the cavity driving velocity increases the average velocity through the slot by only a factor of 2.7.

Des, Hybrid Rans/les and Pans Models for Unsteady Separated Turbulent Flow Simulations

This paper presents computational results for two DES (Detached Eddy Simulation), one hybrid RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)/ LES (Large Eddy Simulation) and some preliminary results from PANS (Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes) turbulence for simulation of unsteady separated turbulent flows. The models are implemented in a full 3-D Navier Stokes solver and are based on the twoequation k-...

Computations of Flow over a Hump Model Using Higher Order Method with Turbulence Modeling

Turbulent separated flow over a two-dimensional hump is computed by solving the RANS equations with k-ω (SST) turbulence model for the baseline, steady suction and oscillatory blowing/suction flow control cases. The flow equations and the turbulent model equations are solved using a fifth-order accurate weighted essentially nonosillatory (WENO) scheme for space discretization and a third order,...

Aiaa 2000-0540 Les and Des Investigations of Turbulent Flow over a Sphere

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) are applied to prediction and investigation of the ow around a sphere. DES is a hybrid approach in which the closure is a simple modi cation to the Spalart-Allmaras model, reducing to Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) in attached regions, and LES away from the wall . Calculations are performed at a Reynolds number, Re = 10, in ...

DES and Hybrid RANS/LES models for unsteady separated turbulent flow predictions

This paper proposes two DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) model and one hybrid RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)/ LES (Large Eddy Simulation) model for the simulations of unsteady separated turbulent flows. The two-equation k-ε based models are implemented in a full 3-D Navier Stokes solver and simulations are carried out using a 3 order Roe scheme. The predictions of the models are compared ...

3D Numerical Simulation of the Separated Turbulent Shallow Flow around a Single Side Obstacle

In this paper, the performance of Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations was evaluated to predict the flow structure developed by the presence of a sidewall obstruction in a uniform open-channel shallow flow. The study of these flow structures is important because they present in several real world configurations, such as groynes in rivers, where the erosion processes, mass transpor...
